Wow really interesting. I just started with travel writing and now am realizing how much there is to actually learn about the niche. It is exciting though and I look forward to seeing more growth. Thanks for the read!
Such a great list — thank you for putting down in words what so many of us for so many years have thought about and discussed. Hopefully this gets read by the people who need to know this the most.
YES to all this! I would also add for me personally:
1) Take a look at the language you're using in your emails to me. I don't want to read emails or press releases that use biased, outdated, offensive, or icky language related to BIPOC people and cultures, or anyone from historically marginalized communities. Let's do better, recognize our biases, get more eyes on the press releases (ideally from the diverse staff you've hired), and be more mindful of how your press releases are coming across to journalists.
2) Don't send me press releases about travel or hospitality companies whose CEOs push for legislation that harms women, BIPOC, queer people, other nationalities, and people with disabilities.
3) Don't send me travel/tourism press releases or invites to webinars or anything related to countries engaging in genocide.
